The Real Madrid team

Real Madrid had an eventful transfer period this summer. With plenty of players leaving the club, those empty spaces had to be filled with new players. Is the new Madrid squad strong enough to compete for titles again?

Expected standard line-up

Real Madrid’s squad consists of 28 players, meaning coach Zinedine Zidane has to decide which 17 players will not feature in the standard line-up. One can expect the standard line-up of Real Madrid to look like this:

New players in the Squad

Without a doubt the star transfer and most expensive player purchased by Real Madrid this summer is Eden Hazard. The Belgian international cost the club about €120 million. One can therefore expect to see him in the line-up.

Other new players include:

  • Éder Militão – FC Porto
  • Ferland Mendy – Olympique Lyonnais
  • Luka Jović – Eintracht Frankfurt
  • Rodrygo -Santos FC

In contrast to Hazard, they will likely start out on the bench, unless they manage to impress Zidane. However, it is not easy to replace another player in the standard line-up.

Subs

As previously mentioned, 17 of Madrid’s 28 players will be sat on the bench or in the stands. However, they could actually make up a pretty good line-up themselves:

The lost son: James Rodriguez

After 2 years with Bayern Munich, James Rodriguez has returned to Real Madrid. Due to Marco Asensio’s severe injury, there is a good chance the James will get playing time. Other than that the breakout star of the 2014 world cup, cannot expect a lot of playing time.

From favourite to bench warmer

For fan favourite Isco minimal playing time also looms this season. With Modric and Kroos in the line-up his chances of starting are equal to 0. Isco’s favourite position is not an easy one either: Zidane does not make use of a classical number 10. Whilst Isco can play well in the midfield, he does not have the running skills to do so. The Spaniard has flirted with other clubs in the past, but a transfer is yet to occur. Will he leave Real Madrid this summer or has he got a plan to get his position in the line-up back?

Players in the stands

Even the bench does not have enough space to house all the players not in the starting line-up. Some will have to take a seat in the stands, for example Bale and Diaz.

€600.000 per week for not even touching a ball. That’s how much the most infamous player earns, who will find himself in the stands. The talk is of Gareth Bale. Once bought for a record breaking €100 million by Real Madrid, it is becoming more and more clear that Gareth Bale does not have a future with this club. What exactly went wrong between the club and Bale remains a mystery, as Bale posed relatively good statistics. In 155 games he scored 78 goals for Madrid.

Real Madrid’s accountants will also not be happy with all the problems concerning Bale. Earning a whopping €600,000 per week for barely playing. There were talks about a transfer to China, but this was rejected. Which club will put both Bale and Real Madrid out of their misery?

Purchased, sold, re-purchased: Mariano Diaz

The transfer of striker Diaz is a great example of how thing should not be done.  In 2011 Real Madrid bought the Dominican striker. At that point, he was supposed to gain experience in the club’s youth teams. In 2017 he was sold to Lyon for €8 million. One year later, Real Madrid bought him back for €22 million. For this price one would expect at least a seat on the bench, however this is not the case. With the purchase of super talent Jovic, the chances are even more grim that Diaz will receive any playing time. It would therefore be understandable, if the Dominican decided to leave the club.

New signings

  • Eden Hazard – Chelsea
  • Luka Jović – Eintracht Frankfurt
  • Éder Militão – FC Porto
  • Ferland Mendy – Olympique Lyonnais
  • Rodrygo – Santos FC

The total sum of these transfers is about €300 million. And there is a good chance it will become even more.

Transfer rumours: Will they also join Real Madrid?

  • Paul Pogba – Manchester United
  • Donny van de Beek – Ajax Amsterdam

Players leaving Real Madrid

  • Mateo Kovacic – Chelsea
  • Marcos Llorente – Atlético Madrid
  • Theo Hernández – AC Milan
  • Raúl de Tomás – Benfica
  • Sergio Reguilón – Sevilla FC
  • Martin Ödegaard – Real Sociedad
  • Jorde de Frutos – Real Valladolid
  • Dani Ceballos – Arsenal
  • Jesús Vallejo – Wolverhampton
  • Javi Sánchez – Real Valladolid
  • Borja Mayoral – UD Levante
  • Luca Zidane – Racing Santander

Real Madrid has earned €115 million with the sale/loan of these players. This means a few more players need to be sold in order to balance the sum of money spent on new players.
