The family of Spanish-Dutch super-talent Marco Asensio made frantic attempts to get him to play for the Netherlands national football team. Talking to AS, Asensio revealed he had been in touch with the staff of ‘Orange’ – and that his Dutch family happened to be in Spain when Asensio got the call.

“They asked if I would consider playing for the Netherlands national team,” wrote Voetbalzone. “Naturally, there were quite a few jokes.”

Team coach Danny Blind personally sounded out the midfielder last month, as well as his assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, Asensio kindly thanked them for the honour of asking twice.

The footballer added that he had found it hard to deal with: “Much has been said and written. But everything is clear now.”
